Our visit to Great Hucklow

For Ken and I it was a first - a visit to this quiet hamlet in Derbyshire, this weekend also gave us an opportunity to get to know Joan, Lillian and David who like us had decided to have a weekend away. Having realised that five people and their luggage would not fit comfortably into one car we travelled in two cars. We met by chance in Buxton, had lunch and wandered around the town centre. About an hour later we moved on to Tideswell, did a bit more sight seeing allowing ourselves time to look around the beautiful 14th century church. ,St John the Baptist. We were about to leave Tideswell when Joan decided she wanted to stay in the area a bit longer than the weekend (she had noticed a poster stating that the MALE Morris Dancers would be performing in Tideswell, and she wanted to see them)... we just moved her on ! and continued our journey to Hucklow.

Later that evening we strolled down to the local pub had a drink and put the world right.

Next day while Lillian, Joan and David visited Chatsworth House Ken and I joined 4 other people, we walked to Eyam via Foolow where we toured the well dressing sites, we clambered over dry stone walls, marched across fields, climbed over stiles and hurried through a couple of smaller fields trying not to disturb the cows as they grazed, a round trip of about 10 miles. Lynne had the weekend well timed, as we were able to enjoy the Eyam Carnival that afternoon. A good mix of street entertainment with brass bands, themed floats, jazz bands and some saucy humour from the NHS team, not forgetting the Blackpool donkeys that turned up offering donkey rides to the children. Having eaten our packed lunch, we then met up with our walking group, and we all started the walk back to Hucklow. Walking back and enjoying the fresh air, gave thought to despite all the rain this summer, nature compensates us by showing so many different shades of green, expressed in the hedgerows, trees, fields and the vivid colours displayed in the wild flowers

Back at The Nightingale Centre, after dinner our group sat outside enjoying our drinks, plenty to talk about and have a good laugh together, until the bats came out and the evening air turned cool. We then went indoors to join the other visitors, about 18 people, sitting around in the lounge. The star of the evening was John Readett, we all enjoyed a good sing along, John leading all the way with his vast repertoire catering for all tastes and ages. Thank you John, a Saturday night enjoyed by all.

Sunday we joined the locals and other visitors in the Chapel at Hucklow for an end of summer service have it, the five us had a great weekend, all without any rain.

Thank you Lynne for arranging our weekend at Hucklow, maybe we can do it all again some-time and perhaps entice other Chapel members to join us.
