GA launch mailing lists

The General Assembly Of Unitarian And Free Christian Churches launched its mailing lists on 21 May 2008.

Their announcement says:

The first of the GA's email lists have gone live and are available on our webpage to anyone who wants to subscribe. More lists will be added soon.

One type of electronic mailing list is an announcement list, which is used primarily as a one-way conduit of information and can only be "posted to" by selected people. This is similar to the current GA email sent from time to time.

The mission of the GA's email lists is to provide a way for groups of like-minded individuals to communicate via email on issues relating to the GA, the wider Unitarian movement, the Districts and the Affiliated Societies. Email lists are a great way to receive announcements or participate in online discussions and participation is free. The email lists cost nothing to subscribe to. To subscribe and participate all you need is an internet connection and an email address.

The current process of sending wide area announcements via the GA email account will end as of 31 May 2008 and all announcements will be made via the new email lists, so you will need to sign up if you want to keep receiving this information.

There are now three announcement lists, instead of the previous one, which will allow you to pick and choose what information you would like to receive.

The new announcement lists are:

GA - News about and from the General Assembly. Focus is national and international.
Events - Information and details about local and regional programmes and activities.
Social Responsibility - News and information regarding campaigns and events that primarily focus on social responsibility and justice issues.

A new email address, lists@unitarian.org.uk has been set up and anyone having information they would like to be considered for posting on these lists should send the information to this account and not the ga@unitarian.org.uk account.

There are also

Discussion Lists [in which all members of the group automatically receive copies of and can respond to the same email messages, and Web-based sharing folders, where they can store documents and bookmarks for access by all other group members. Group members can also access and search the entire history of their group's email communications via a threaded Web archive, rather than managing locally stored copies in their email programs, and they can post to the list and respond to archived messages directly from the Web interface (like a bulletin-board or forum).]

Worship - Forum for the sharing of worship material including readings, prayers and hymns. Moderated by the Rev Linda Hart, member of the GA Worship Panel
Religious Education & Youth - Networking opportunity for Unitarians working with young people to share ideas, materials and information about conferences and other events. Moderated by Peter Teets, young people leader at Richmond Unitarian Church.

The new mailing list facility is powered by Electric Embers using the NPOGroups version of Sympa 5.3.4 at a cost to the GA of $10 a month, according to the information on the electricembers website.
