Jane Barraclough, in conversation with Andrew Shanks: 'Do We Need Creeds?'

At Manchester Cathedral. 2012 is the 350th anniversary of the 'Great Ejection': the decisive historic parting of the ways between the Church of England and the various Nonconformist churches.
One minister 'ejected' from his post at Manchester Collegiate Church (now the Cathedral) was Henry Newcome - a man of conscience and also a prolific diarist - who became the founder of Cross Street Chapel; which later went on to be the centre for the Unitarian Church in Manchester. Jane Barraclough is the current minister there.
To mark this in some ways rather melancholy anniversary, we are delighted to welcome back the minister of Cross Street Chapel, after all these years, for a discussion of some of the fundamental theological issues at stake in this long history.

Unitarian Music Society Recording, Manchester

Some congregations have little or no access to live musicians and rely on CDs. The Unitarian Music Society are responding to a demand for more CDs to support Hymns for Living with a recording day on Saturday, 18th February at Cross Street, Manchester. 10.00 for 10.30 and finish no later than 4.30. We shall record fifty hymns to make two CDs. We need a minimum of thirty enthusiastic singers to make a good congregational sound. Volunteer to David Dawson, 9, Olicana Park, Ilkley LS29 0AW.

click to see Conflict Resolution training Invitation to participate in Conflict Resolution Training which will take place in February 2012. The Local Leadership Strategy Group (LLSG) has commissioned a seminar on Conflict Resolution which will be led by Colin Patterson of the Mennonite Bridge Builders' Ministries. Colin led a similar workshop for Ministers at the Ministerial Fellowship Conference in September and the reports of it were excellent! At the Facilitation & Support training held last February, an urgent need for this type of training for Congregational Leaders was identified and it makes absolute sense for us to take it from the same leader as the Ministers so we share a common understanding with those Ministers who attended the UMF Conference. The seminar will be from early afternoon (arrivals and checking in ready to start promptly at 15.00) on Tuesday 28th February until after lunch on Thursday 1st March and it will be held at The Nightingale Centre in Great Hucklow. There will be a maximum of 24 participants. The LLSG will pay the fees for the leader so there will only be accommodation (approx. £114.50) and travel costs to be met by participants and we hope that congregations or Districts will help with these costs. There might be some money available for small bursaries to enable participants who would not otherwise be able to attend to do so. We are very lucky that we have been able to arrange this training and fund the fees. To participate in a similar 'public' programme would be in the region of £900 per person plus travel and our February programme will be customised to our particular needs as Unitarian communities. This is an early request for 'expressions of interest.' If you would like to participate, please let me know and I will send further information and booking form shortly.

DISCOVER THE A TO Z OF TIBET AT AN UPCOMING ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
From March 5th-11th, York Unitarians will host an art and photo exhibition from the Tibet Society in London. Organised by Tibet Support Group York, the exhibition will be on display at St Saviourgate Unitarian Chapel in the City Centre and is open daily, Monday to Saturday March 5-10 from 10am to 4 pm, and Sunday March 11, the final day, from 12-4pm. Admission is free.
"These photos show the many different aspects of Tibetan culture and give an insight into the lives of the Tibetan people," says Dee Boyle, one of the organisers. "Five Yorkshire artists will also display their work based on images of Tibet, a country that many people have heard of but perhaps know little about."
Dee continues, "Tibetan goods will also be on sale from various Tibet Organisations in the UK and direct from Tibetan refugees in India."
Admission to the exhibition is free, and donations are very welcome. The ground floor of the chapel is fully accessible.
For more about the chapel or York Unitarians, visit www.ukunitarians.org.uk/york.

click to see John Relly Beard Lecture - part of the Unitarian Meetings (the GA)

The Unitarian Ministerial Fellowship presents the 2012 John Relly Beard Lecture. This year's lecture will be delivered by Rev. Peter Owen-Jones, who grew up in Southern England and spent time working in the Advertising Industry until he was ordained in the Anglican faith in 1992. He was written several books and recently has presented some highly acclaimed documentaries for the BBC including Around the World in Eighty Faiths, Extreme Pilgrim and more recently How to Live a Simple Life. More recently he has been concentrating on the issues around Christianity and the environment. He is the founder of the Arbory Trust, the only nominally Christian woodland burial site in the UK and earlier this year set up the Life Cairn Project which is a memorial to all the species that have become extinct as a result of human behaviour. In May 2011 he spoke at the Schumacher College in Dartington when the 150th anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore was celebrated in a week-long festival.
