History Festival (click images to enlarge)

It has been three years since Tessa Hall presented her excellent talk for Plymouth History Festival on our much-loved mural (see image), which was painted by local artist Jack Pickup in 1959.

Now Tessa has produced a Virtual Exhibition on Jack Pickup for the 2020 History Festival, which is in three sections: 1 Church Mural (and possible influences), 2 Paintings of Plymouth's Waterfront and 3) Paintings of Plymouth and Surrounding Area.

You will be able to view the Virtual Exhibition here from 2pm 21st May https://plymouthhistoryfestival.com/2020/05/21/jack-pickup-exhibition/

A booklet entitled 'Jack Pickup's Mural for Plymouth Unitarian Church' by Tessa Hall is available for £5.00 + £0.25 contribution to P&P.

The booklet far exceeds our expectations in its comprehensiveness. It makes a really interesting read. I especially found the chapter on symbolism and interpretation excellent and really informative. Letter from the artist's daughter, Gill.

As you well know there is relatively little research conducted about Pickup and I am very glad to hear that your research and booklet will do much to help amend that. Terah Walkup, Curator (Fine Art), Plymouth City Council
